Have you read your horoscope today?
How accurate was it?
Not very? Not surprising.
The horoscope is a generic reading for the placement of one heavenly body in the sky, the Sun, for every person born during a certain period of time. We are all familiar with the speed of the Sun through the path it makes in our sky. (It takes the Earth one year to orbit around the Sun… making it about 30 days for the Sun to go through each 30 degree segment named after a constellation in the zodiac.)
This is the glyph that appears in a natal chart to represent the Sun. It’s easy to remember because the Sun is at the center of our solar system.
The Sun is powerful. It gives heat and light that support life on the 3rd planet in orbit. But it’s not the whole solar system.
Any beings looking at our solar system from other locations in the universe will see our star first, Sol.
So it is with our Sun sign. The sign itself influences how the ‘Sun’ of your personality shines. It’s how we show up when others look at us.
I don’t need to go through every single Zodiac sign – most of us have a basic idea of what the different Sun sign personalities are like – or at least we know their reputations.
However, to say that one person’s Sun sign description completely describes them is basically committing astrological profiling. It’s turning what is supposed to be a flexible guiding archetype into a literal, categorical stereotype.
There is more to a person than their Sun sign. Specifically, there are 9 other ‘planets’ to include in an astrological chart profile. [This includes Moon sign, and the sign where Pluto resides, because even though neither of them are considered ‘planets’ scientifically, they are ‘sky-wanderers’ in the astrological interpretation tradition.]
I hope over the next few days that you will follow me as we use those same Zodiac understandings for other parts of our being besides personality. Symbolism is a powerful part of interpretation in astrology. If you have the ability to think in images, to interpret symbols liberally, then approach any interpretation of any planet in any sign with an open mind to the powerful symbols the planet and the sign represent.
After the Sun sign, it’s best to investigate your Rising Sign and your Moon Sign. These are the next two strongest points in a natal chart.
From there we will look into the signs containing Mercury, Venus and Mars; then, Jupiter and Saturn; finally, the outer planets (discovered during the contemporary age of astrology) Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
I hope you will join me.

In the US, today is Mother's day -
In honor of the Mother archetype - Today we're exploring the sign of Cancer, the symbolic 'mother' energy in the Zodiac.
Most encounter their understanding of Cancerian energy through the sun sign articles in the paper.
Cancer as an archetype symbolizes the concepts of mother, early home environment, comfort, emotional expression, and self-care needs.
Cancer occurs in the natal chart of every individual. It makes up the fourth sign in the sequence of twelve signs of the Zodiac. It's "home" position is at the bottom of the zodiac wheel forming the foundation/nest area for individuals.
Not everyone has the Sun in Cancer - but we all have significant portions of our chart and personality that are affected by Cancer and its ruling 'planet', the Moon.
For further exploration of ways Cancer energy may be influencing you, here is a list of various planets and how their influence is modified when they are "IN" the sign of Cancer. You will notice the repetition of the sign's symbolism - the difference in the individual placements is in how the energy is modified or expressed.
Sun in Cancer - (Sun represents individuality) These individuals shine their light by feeling intensely, expressing their emotions, seeking to nurture others, providing comfort through environment or food.
Cancer Rising [meaning Cancer was the sign on the Horizon at the time of birth] (Rising sign represents approach to life) - These individuals approach life sensitively interacting with others but also considering their own emotional needs. They may be oversensitive to others who need mothering and drawn into meeting the mothering needs that they see around them.
Moon in Cancer (Moon represents emotional needs and subconscious reactions) - The Moon is considered the ruling planet of Cancer. These individuals can be extremely sensitive to the moods of others causing them to be protective, intuitive, and nurturing in response to the emotions around them.
Mercury in Cancer - (Mercury represents thinking and communicating processes) - These individuals comunicate about and with their emotions, often considering emotions in the information that they absorb from others. They can also provide supportive nurture to new ideas - their own or others'.
Venus in Cancer - (Venus symbolizes relationships, appreciation, and affection) - These individuals are drawn to relationships that FEEL like family. They are very protective of their own friendships and intimate relationships and express their affection in a very cautious way.
Mars in Cancer - (Mars symbolizes taking action or initiative) - These individuals take action indirectly and can often be shy or hold themselves back because of their own fear and unconscious fears. However, they will fiercely defend family if their loved ones are threatened.
Jupiter in Cancer - (Jupiter symbolizes expansion and improvement) - These individuals grow and improve throughout their lives using the emotional sensitivity to others as well as opportunities to nurture and protect others. They are generous emotionally.
Saturn in Cancer - (Saturn symbolizes self-preservation and authority) - These individuals often fall into the self-preservation/caution combination that Cancer and Saturn share. On the other hand if they can accept their own emotional nature and express it comfortably, they provide great comfort to the rest of the Cancerian family.
A Note about the outer planets - because they move slowly, these planets are in one sign for longer periods of time - and therefore have an infludence on a whole generation of people. Their interpretation will be true for a whole generation - but their expression in an individual chart will be stronger or weaker depending on placement.
Uranus in Cancer - (Uranus symbolizes uniqueness, freedom, genius.) - The generation born between 1949 and 1956. They will play an important role in integrating emotions into the growth of the realm of ideas and communication. Example: emoticons
Neptune in Cancer - (Neptune symbolizes spirituality, dreams, inspiration, imagination.) - The generation born between 1901 and 1916. They play an important role in nurturing spirituality and providing a safe environment for the growth of spiritual/emotional connection. They have a great amount of empathy and my hold a strong emotional attachment to their spiritual experiences. (Neptune won't be in Cancer again until 2065 - 2078.)
Pluto in Cancer - (Pluto symbolizes powerful change, rebirth, opportunities to dig deep and confront self-darkness.) The generation born between 1914 and 1939. They are deeply introspective emotionally and have had opportunities to redefine the social norms of family and personal growth. Often feel that their emotional security is threatened.

Current astro-weather update: Venus has just moved into Cancer (May 7) so babies born in the next month will have the Venus in Cancer energy present in their chart. For those of us living through this time, it is a good time to pay attention to relationships either as a mother or to your mother. It's also a great time to be aware of how you relate to your own emotions, of your emotional health in your relationships, and of how you nurture yourself within relationships.

Do you have a number of close friends/family members/key people in your life with birthdays at around the same time?
It could be that there is a point / planet in your astrological chart with which they connect. The sun is close to the same degree in the sky for those with similar birthdays. It's possible that this point is a connection in your chart ant that the 'light' that they shine in your life is attempting to show you something important about who you are.
Synastry is the name given to comparing two natal charts to each other in order to look at the many complexities in any relationship between two people. Although merely looking at someone's sun-sign is a simplistic comparison given that they are so much more, it's a great place to start for the beginner. Typically people want to look at dynamics with their significant other, however, this activity provides benefits for parent and child, siblings, coworkers, neighbors and any other relationship that you may wish to strengthen or understand.
I can help you understand the complexities of your own chart - before delving into how you may be interacting with others in your life.

A few principles to keep in mind when viewing an astrological chart or reading or consulting with an astrologer:
The planets are like gauges. Their unique placements in your natal chart are indicators of certain energy patterns that are present in your life force.
Because the planets are archetypal representations of your energy, they do NOT determine your life for you. You make choices every day on how you interact with every circumstance and energy. The planets are only indicators of what types of energy you may encounter and how your method of handling them may work or not.
The subject of the birth chart is best able to tell the story of their chart whether they understand the symbolism of the planets or not. Any astrologer who gets dogmatic about specific interpretations is not open to all that the universe can say through its variety of energy. Specifically they are not open to what YOU have to say about how that energy is working through you.
A computer CAN generate chart placements and generic interpretations for the majority of people. However, for any details or discrepancies, consult with a trusted astrologer.
Also, a few warnings about common pitfalls most people fall into when using astrology: WARNING: and this may be redundant but it can’t be stated often enough… do NOT treat a reading as if it was a horoscope. You have the capability to make your own choices no matter what kind of circumstances are coming. You navigate the energy – do not let it dictate to you.
Also, beware of the tendency to seize on one negative or even several negative statements – that is actually an indicator of a fear you have. Navigate it by acknowledging the fear as well as the presence of that energy in your life without passing judgment on it (if you can). It’s been my experience that if something in a reading resonates with my fear I can often end up keeping that one thing in my focus and miss all the strengths and tools that the reading has offered to help me through the challenge.
Finally, An OFFER:
